Today, we’re going to be looking at how to create the 3D glasses text effect with only CSS. A familiarity with CSS is required but it is a very easy concept to grasp. For a clearer example, please take a look my monologue theme for a live preview of the effect. (Also, click on images for larger view)
So basically, the 3D Glasses effect is just using 2 text-shadow properties placed in different positions to achieve the tri-coloured look. Having one text-shadow property can make a text look like the following:
The 2px explains the positioning in the horizontal plane (positive is to the right, negative is to the left). The 0 explains the positioning in the vertical plane (negative is upward, positive is downward) and the .2px explains the extent of blur and of course, #FF0000 is the hex colour of the shadow.
For example, a blue text-shadow going ONLY to the left will look like the following (note the negative sign):
A quick Google search told me that apparently no one knows how to do this properly :P It’s possible to redirect all your links from your old tumblr url to your new tumblr url (assuming you saved your old url). This isn’t just redirecting to your new tumblr’s homepage.
(try it!) If you’ve ever tried to find a post off someone’s old url, you know how annoying it can be to track down the post in the new url.
How to use: Just add this script either before your end body tag (</body>) or in the head section (<head></head>) of the tumblr where you saved your old URL. Change oddhour.tumblr.com to whatever your new URL is. To add a delay before redirecting, refer to this post.
//redirect to new blog
window.location.replace('http://oddhour.tumblr.com' + window.location.pathname);
So let’s talk about your new favorite website and app, Duolingo.
I haven’t seen anyone on my dash talking about this and that’s a fucking crying shame because Duolingo is the shit. You can use Duolingo to learn Spanish, French, Italian, German, Portuguese. Even Dutch, if you’re feeling frisky and want to play with a Beta test (Dutch is not available on Android, but def. grabbable online for all of your language expanding pleasures).
What makes Duolingo so damn special? They make learning a new language into something they call gamefication. You earn points and you kick your friends’ asses with your mad linguistic skills.(Hell yes I’m at the top of my personal leaderboard)
No sass about my idioms being weak. Deutsche sprache, schwere sprache.
And it works. Like, really really works.
But what makes Duolingo so amazing is that its goal from the very beginning was to be a free and easily accessible ESL tool in order to make people more employable world wide. Even their English certification test (normally only $20!) is free right now!
And there are no ads.
The program is supported through the crowd-sourced translations the users do as part of the “immersion” training. You get practice, the Duolingo community talks about it and makes corrections and meshes the good work from different people together, and the final product becomes a translation Duolingo sells to keep the lights on. So to speak.
Will you sound like a native? Probably not. Will you be able to hold your own in a gramatically imperfect and probably clunky way in a normal conversation? Hey, it’s a damn sight better than where I’m at now, so I’m in. And so should you.
It’s super easy to find a way to use it. You can get it from the Apple Store and you can get it from Google Play. You can log in to the website and learn and find extras that aren’t on the app. You can… probably not use it via smoke signals, but I won’t stand in your way if you want to try, bro.
Tags are a wonderful way to organize your blog, and most people don’t seem to realize that if you reblog a post, it will not show up in tumblr search with your tag, but only in your own blog. Only ORIGINAL posts will show up in the main search with your tags so make the most of that.
Avoid “&”,”+”,”/”,”%” and (right now) dashes “-” and question marks “?”, tumblr tags don’t know what to do with these and if someone clicks on that tag on your blog they will go nowhere.
You can link people to these tagged pages in your sidebar, or in your blog just use http://*yourblogname*.tumblr.com/tagged/*tag you wish to link them to*
Whoa! “What’s with the %20 you say?”, it’s what tumblr turns the spacebar into, you can also use an underscore and tumblr will still find it.
TRACKED TAGS SEARCH LIMIT?: I know it’s frustrating, but you can in fact only have twenty tracked tags before the tags you are tracking will not show new ones beside them anymore. You can still use it to get SEE them, you just have to check them all manually.
I also read something last night that said after a certain amount of tags on your post the extra ones will no longer show up in search, don’t know how true it is though.
Edit: according to justcantdescribeu “Normally, tumblr only indexes your first 5 tags on any post, and tumblr only indexes tags if it’s on an original post, not a reblog. By indexing, I mean the part where you search up tags on tumblr through the sidebar on your dashboard (tumblr.com/tagged). The sixth and further tags won’t be indexed, but they can still be searched up on your own blog. “
and from yetanothercriminalmindsfanatic"re: tags, first 5 of OP’s post show up in the tracked tags. the first 10 of any post are searchable within a blog. posts retain the first 20. attempt 21 or more, and the extras get swallowed up/disappear after clicking publish/queue/save to drafts. (i’ve had the misfortune of encountering this before)"
